Fieldwork and Fieldwork Training

I am a formally trained ethnologist and experienced fieldworker, offering training and mentorship in field recording techniques, the ethics and practice of ethnographic collection, and their application in educational and creative projects. I have collaborated with students, visual artists, writers, musicians, aspiring folklorists, and creative educators, helping them integrate fieldwork into their research and artistic endeavours!

I have experience working with Local Voices CIC, an organisation founded by ethnologists with a mission to help communities across Scotland identify, collect and engage with their local heritage and intangible cultural heritage (ICH), offering services in fieldwork, workshops, community engagement, consultancy and training.

I have worked as an ‘ethnologist-in-residence’ for several creative projects and can offer services in fieldwork and creative commmunity engagement for your project or organisation (see portfolio).

I have also delivered citizen fieldwork training and mentorship to groups and organisations in how to make field recordings of oral history, folklore or contemporary community stories. This training includes preparation, ethics, considerations, responsibilities, safeguards, choosing equipment, interview technique, technical skills, archiving, reflections on creative practice and how these recordings can be used to develop educational and artistic projects.
